Graduation Announcements - Thinking Outside the Box
This is the time of year when many of you are thinking about ordering graduation announcements.  We are certainly familiar with the traditional announcements that are offered at most schools.  While these announcements are beautiful and serve a purpose, why not be different this year and think outside of the box?  We can offer you custom designed Graduation Announcements/Invitations with coordinating Thank You Notes that incorporate your favorite senior portraits.

Update: Class of 2011 Senior Representative Applications
In our last newsletter, we announced that were we were accepting applications for Senior Class Representatives for the Class of 2011.  We received an immediate response from our Bonny Eagle contingent, and we have selected two students that we are very excited to begin working with soon.  However, we are still in need of a Gorham senior representative.

If you are a Gorham High School junior and you are interested in earning FREE senior portraits (or you know someone who is), contact us today for more details on our program.

D-Photo Creations:  Back by Popular Demand

D-Photo Slate ExampleAs you may know, if you follow our "More In Focus" blog, our D-Photo Creations classes were initiated in November and they were a huge success.  While we had planned to introduce a new class this month, our slate class has proven to be very popular. So, we are pleased to announce that our slate class is back!

Our next class is scheduled for Sunday afternoon, January 17th, from 1-4 p.m. just in time to make this beautiful slate for Valentine's Day.  Class size is limited to 4 students, and the cost for the class is $25.   The materials will be provided for you - all you need to do is bring your own pictures and your creative energy.  At this time, there is only one slot left.  If you are interested in participating, please contact us as soon as possible to reserve your spot.

If you are interested in attending but are not available on the 17th - don't worry - we will be scheduling another class in February.   For those of you who are looking for something to do over February vacation, we will be offering a special "Mommy & Me" class.  If you are interested in participating in either of these additional classes, please contact us so we can plan accordingly.

Staying Fresh and New
We are always thinking about ways to stay fresh with new product offerings and new services.   Doing the same thing year in and year out can be boring for everyone involved.  Here are some of the new things you can expect to see in 2010.
  • New Product: Accordion Wallets.  We tested this fabulous new product with some of our seniors and families last year, and everyone loved them!!  With this product, you receive 12 of your favorite images in 3 sets of accordion wallets.
  •  New Product: Leather Proof Books.   We have shared this gorgeous handmade leather proof book with some of you over the last few months.  Based on your feedback, we are pleased to offer this as an alternative to our hardcover 5x5 proof book.
  •  New Services: Women and Wine Get Better with Age. Reaching a milestone birthday can often be a time for self-reflection, and that's exactly what Judianne did last Fall.  One of the many results of that reflection was the realization that we, as women, are fabulous for so many reasons that we shouldn't have to wait for a particular occasion (like a birthday) to celebrate that fact.  Stay tuned . . . more details will be coming on this one.
  •  D-Photo Creations: New Classes.  Given the success of our first official class, we most certainly will continue to inspire you with new class offerings throughout the year.
Tip Corner: Wedding Photographer "Must Ask" Questions
Engagement PhotoNow that the holidays have come and gone, there are likely many newly engaged couples excited to start planning their perfect day.  Given the number of companies offering wedding services, sometimes it can be hard to determine which provider will be the best match for you.

Photography services can represent a significant portion of your wedding budget, depending on the options you select.  A large part of the photography fee is based on the labor for your wedding day, during the post-processing of pictures, and during the design and creation of your custom wedding album.  Just like everything else, photography services can work within your budget.   However, the most important thing to remember is not to sacrifice quality for the sake of saving money.  In today's world of digital cameras, many people are willing to take photographs for you, but they may not provide the quality images, post-processing and service that a wedding photographer will deliver.  Remember, this will be your one keepsake from the day to look back on for years to come.

Your wedding photographer is the only vendor that you will be spending your entire day with, so it is important that both of you are comfortable with the photographer.  In an effort to help you select the photographer that will best meet your needs, we recommend meeting with the photographer in person and asking several key questions, like:
  • What type of equipment do you use?  Of course, we don't expect you to know the differences between a Nikon and a Canon camera, but it allows you the opportunity to hear the photographers talk about the equipment and provide you some insight into their knowledge of the equipment and the profession.
  • What happens if you experience an equipment failure?  This is important to know.  Camera equipment can break or malfunction during weddings and a photographer should have back-up equipment available on-site.
  • How many photographers will cover your wedding day?  Will they both be shooting?  Of course, the more photographers you have the better coverage you receive.  More important, you want to make sure that you are able to meet all photographers or assistants that will be at your wedding before you sign your contract to ensure that you are comfortable with them.
  • Do you back-up your files?  In the digital world it is important to backup your photographic files.  Our standard practice for weddings is to perform a back-up to a portable storage unit as each memory card is removed from the camera.  Then, when we return to the studio, we download all of the memory cards to our computer system which creates another copy of your files.
  • How would you describe your photography style?  There are various styles of photography, and each photographer has a unique style or combination of styles.  Our style is a balanced mix of traditional photography (posed ceremonial images) and photojournalism (capturing the moments as they happen; capturing the story).  Look for a photographer that will focus on what is important to you.
These are just a few questions you should ask.  Make sure you write down some additional questions you may have during the initial meeting.  It is okay to ask follow-up questions if you are uncertain of an answer.  You want to be truly comfortable with your selection before making this important investment.
