TIP CORNER: Organizing your Digital Pictures |
|
At this time of
year, a lot of us start thinking about getting things organized.
Whether it is a New Year's resolution, a decision to finally tackle
that linen closet, or getting things organized to prepare your taxes -
organization seems to be a high priority on a lot of "to-do" lists
right now.
With the
increasing popularity of digital cameras, many people have another
item to get organized - all of those personal pictures floating around
on the computer . . . somewhere. In this installment of the
TIP CORNER, we thought we would share some of our organization tips to
help you get and keep those digital pictures organized.
- Save your
personal pictures in folders on your computer by year, e.g. 2008,
2009, and so on.
- Within each
year's folder, save your pictures in subfolders by the date the
picture was taken with a little descriptor, e.g. 011109 (hockey
game). This will help you find them later.
- Saving
pictures by date folder is easier when you download them as you take
them. If you save several events on your memory card at a time before
downloading, manually separate them by date when you download them.
- After
downloading them, delete the ones you know you will never print or
e-mail, e.g. the blurry ones or the ones where eyes are closed.
It only takes a few minutes, and it saves precious space on your
computer for other things.
-
Be sure to back-up your pictures regularly and somewhere other
than on your computer! We have all heard stories about
when a computer crashes and precious family pictures are lost. To
help protect against this, get in a habit of performing regular
back-ups (i.e. making copies) of your personal pictures. You
can do this by copying your pictures off your computer to a CD, DVD or
even an external hard drive every few months. In the event of a
computer failure where pictures are lost, you will be at risk of
losing only those pictures since your last back-up.
